There Is Always The Next Thing, But Do We Need It?
We, the humans, are so easily seduced by the shiny new things that are invented. It’s a human flaw and something we have adjusted to. The lifespan of products is getting shorter and shorter. While the new shiny things get more expensive, I think it will slow down soon. Here is why:
Sustainability
We have all started to think about sustainability in everything we buy. We are increasingly aware that the earth’s resources are limited, and we need to restrain their usage.
Are Upgrades Necessary?
When I look at mobile phones, I can see that the upgrades from one model to the other are decreasing; for an average user, the difference isn’t even notable as they use only 5–15% of the mobile phone’s capacity. So the need to upgrade every year is flawed and unnecessary. But ofc if your are a power user, the upgrades year by year can be a factor that makes a difference,
Use Refurbished And Recycled
My next computer will be refurbished; even if I’m a power user of my electronic tools, I don’t see the point in paying 35–60% more for an upgrade to this year’s model. The same goes for clothes and other things that we use in our everyday life.
